4 prolific poet. creative craftsman. mystic maker

Phil’s work shows the influences of the Expressionist and Asian artists he most admired, yet it is uniquely his own.

In addition to his myriad drawings and paintings, Phil was an incredibly prolific writer. He developed an extensive comic strip, produced journals, scrapbooks, abstract visual narratives, all enclosed in his custom wood-crafted boxes.

He hand-wrote five volumes of handwritten philosophical treatises in which he outlined his own religion in a book called The Flute of God [title page and random excerpt below.]

His religion drew on Animism, Hinduism, Christianity and other world systems. However, like his art, the vision was his own and its bedrock was clear: Love and kindness for everyone.

He was a familiar figure on the streets of Kensington, walking miles daily; nodding to neighbors, protecting and feeding animals, counseling friends, planting flowers in empty spaces, regularly picking up trash from the edges of his world and wordlessly engaging others to join in his constructive service.

Phil was his religion.
His religion was Phil.

now proud owners of She Bear and have made a bid on Flame in the Pasture. I'm thrilled and excited. I can't wait to have She Bear in hand and I know just where I want it to hang in our living area!

My husband and I are now thrilled to own "She Bear" and to have a bid on "Flame in the Pasture." I am so sorry for the disaster in the Caribbean. Each day I hold this in my heart: When we look upon another, any other, I remember that what is happening is the Universe looking upon Itself---Universe meaning that everyone and everything is One. The Prophet and the Qur’an say: “He sent Himself with Himself to Himself.” Ibn ’Arabi quote. Thank you for offering this inspiring art for Puerto Rico. Love & Blessings

Kathy, Your support of the people of Puerto Rico, of Phil's vision, and your beautiful quote about the Universe Looking at Itself are all such a sweet contribution.
Thank you for taking the time to bid, buy and WRITE here.

His thoughts are so beautifully articulate, sincere, heartful and specific. As if he's seeing into subtle layers of life/existence that most of us can't see. Lovely.

Elizabeth, Thank you for your compassionate insight into Phil's art. And I really appreciate your professional counsel and recommendation/reminder to me to check with the National Alliance for Mental Illness when I asked for some current and specific information about his illness. (This organization helped my family cope & find help at several points in my brother's life, but I'd forgotten them.)
I do think schizophrenia often is related to an inherent propensity toward authentically sensitive & creative perceptions of reality. One recent interview of a number of schizophrenic young-adults from the BBC was unanimous in their opinion of a correlation. I believe it, though it's certainly a very mixed "blessing."
